Starting with physical principles of ultrasonography and the basics of imaging optimization, Small Animal Abdominal Ultrasonography describes practical application of ultrasonography for diagnosing disorders of the liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, urinary tract, adrenal glands, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, peritoneal and retroperitoneal spaces, abdominal lymph nodes, and abdominal vasculature.

Abdominal ultrasonography is a noninvasive technique that provides a cross-sectional view of the abdominal organs based on differences in acoustic impedance. Using noninvasive, non-ionizing waves of sound propagated into tissues, ultrasonography creates images of structures in the body that have both static (such as the liver) and dynamic (such as blood flow in the vessels) components.
